A little about Agra:

Agra requires no introduction due to the presence of Taj Mahal. Agra received preferential treatment from the Moghuls, especially by Akbar, who saw good strategy in making Agra as the capital of his empire. Once this decision was taken the next decision was to build the Agra Fort, his first building and architectural endeavour.

At this time, Akbar's hold on his Empire was tenuous and the need of the time was to establish the supremacy, the authority and legitimacy of his dynasty and dazzle the masses, saying that he has arrived.

The brilliance of Agra Fort's design can be judged by the fact that the next three forts that were built, had the same basic format, including the last one that was built by Shah Jahan in Delhi.

Both Taj Mahal and Agra Fort should be visited. Taj Mahal is the glorification of love and romance in the orchestrated symphony of white marble further enhanced by adorning the white marble with 28 varieties of precious and semiprecious stones.

Moving beyond these two world heritage monuments, Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, the following are worthy of a visit as well:

Itmad-ud-Daula tomb or the Baby Taj as it is commonly referred to.

Sikandara, the mausoleum of Akbar with naughty monkeys.

Fatehpur Sikri, the red stone city built by Akbar and today called as the ghost city. This actually is not in Agra, but about 43 km away on the Agra Jaipur highway.
